By following this list of must-haves, you will never again find yourself without something to wear or stuck with last years’ outfit.
Trends are great! The trendy items we find ourselves purchasing every season help keep our style up to date. But with each new fad comes an end and then we find ourselves yet again throwing out clothing because they’re not longer “in”.
Personal fashion is similar to puberty. We all go through our awkward stage. Whether it’s wearing white after Labor Day (does anyone actually follow this rule) or getting caught wearing denim on denim (RIP to the days of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears). The truth is that hiccups are going to happen as we all watch our personal style evolve. But there are some great items that will never go out of style and allow you to still experiment with the current trends, all while staying fashionable!
By following this list of must haves, you will never again find yourself without something to wear or stuck with last years outfit.
1. Basic Plain Tees
Black, white, grey, and navy. Stock up on these four neutral colors and you’ll have the perfect partner to a fabulously effortless look. V-Neck, crew neck, short sleeve or long, the best things about tees are varieties of style without taking away from the simplicity. So whether you layer this perfect T-shirt under a sweater or over a tank top, tuck it into a skirt or let it hang free with a pair of denim cutoffs, one thing is for sure: Nothing is more essential to your closet than this trusty staple.
2. The LBD
Thank you Audrey Hepburn for making a simple black dress the most important staple in a woman’s life. Not only does the color black go with everything, but this color is slimming and a simple black dress will never go out of style. This versatile piece can be worn to work with a simple sweater and tights, and then quickly transformed for a night out with a pair of heels and statement necklace. Trust me, you don’t want to be caught without this go-to piece in your closet.
3. A Blazer
Every closet should have a tailored jacket that can be worn with jeans or over a cocktail dress. To keep it feminine, be sure the silhouette is fitted or to make it casual go with something a little more loose. My favorite things about blazers are the mass choices of style and color. This timeless piece allows you to get a little creative all while staying relevant to the ongoing trends.
4. A trusty brand of jeans
I don’t think I can stress how amazing it feels to finally find a brand of jeans that fit you the right way! It is truly a process but once you find the perfect pair it’s as if you have come across a pot of gold. So my tip is to buy more than one pair of jeans when you find the right pair! Get them in dark, light, and colored. There’s nothing more versatile then a great pair of jeans and you’ll find yourself holding onto them like a baby with a blanket.
5. Ankle boots
The ankle booties have really been making a name for themselves recently. And for good reason. Pair them up with a pair of boyfriend jeans for a casual look, or with some tights and a dress to spice up the night, these closet staples aren’t going away any time soon.
Flats go with everything and can be found in various colors and patterns. We don’t always want to wear a pair of heels when dressing up, but we surely can’t wear sneakers. Whether you like the feminine touch of a ballet flat, or the vintage look of oxfords, a pair of flats is necessary for every woman.
7. Trench Coat
There is no item more essential in any woman’s closet during the rainy season then a functional, well-tailored trench coat. A good trench coat will last you a long time and will make nearly every outfit look put-together and classic. Throw on some sassy rain boots with a classic umbrella, and you’ve got yourself a fashionable look that even the rain can’t harm.
8. A scarf
I love scarves! Blanket scarves, patterned scarves, knitted scarves. I just love them! Not only do they come in assorted colors and patterns, but you can bring creativity alive with the way you tie them around your neck. It’s a piece that can add instant style impact to a suit or a crisp white shirt. Pick one in a bold color or vivid pattern; tie it onto your neck or purse handle. It’s the perfect touch to an outfit without being out of place.
9. A big bag
I love my little clutches and handbags. They are cute and take up little room. But they just aren’t practical for everyday life. Nobody is telling you to go out and buy the Grandmothers bag from Halloween Town (although that would be cool). A big bag can be fashionable and functional all at once. You won’t be sorry the day you add this staple to your closet, allowing you to carry everything you need while looking great!
10. A timeless piece
Watches have become the new go-to for arm candy. While they have always been around, watches have begun making statements with the various sizes and styles one can find. Stack your wrist with a watch and some bangles or varieties of bracelets. Whether you love diamonds or a similar style to your boyfriends, a watch is a piece worth putting the phone away just to check the time.
